Steve co-authored a new report with the University of Michigan examining the economic impact of refugees. In the Economic Impact of Refugees in Southeast Michigan report, we find that, in 2016 alone, refugees resettled in Southeast Michigan over the past decade generated between $229.6 million and $295.3 million in new spending, along with between 1,798 and 2,311 jobs.
In Brian Dickerson's op-ed in The Detroit News the other day responding to Trump's decision to cut the number of refugees we take in, he referenced this new report and summed up the conclusion: "But make no mistake: If we persist in slamming the door on refugees fleeing war and persecution, we in Michigan risk forfeiting our prosperity as well as our humanity."
